An octopus never relies on just one sucker to grip something — each arm is lined with roughly 250 of them, all capable of gripping independently and adjusting to the texture of whatever they’re holding. A giant Pacific octopus has eight arms, which puts the total sucker count somewhere north of 2,000.
The Math Turns Brutal Fast
Multiply 35 pounds by that many suckers, even accounting for the fact they’re rarely all engaged at maximum force simultaneously, and researchers have estimated the combined pulling capacity of a giant Pacific octopus at over a quarter ton — around 500 pounds or more of grip strength distributed across its arms.

Put in more familiar terms, that’s roughly the combined grip strength needed to lift a small car off the ground. In practice, an octopus uses this power on a much smaller scale — prying open clam shells, wrestling crabs out of tight crevices, and gripping rocky surfaces against strong ocean currents. The largest suckers, positioned closest to the mouth, do the heaviest work, tearing apart prey that would otherwise be too tough to eat.
It’s a reminder that “soft-bodied” doesn’t mean weak. An octopus has no bones to leverage force the way a mammal does — instead, it built an army of two thousand tiny, independent grippers, and let the numbers do the work.
