Squeeze your fist as hard as you can, and a bald eagle’s foot can still out-crush you roughly ten times over. That number alone is impressive. What makes it strange is how the eagle does it — and the popular story about why it never lets go turns out to be a myth.
The Secret Isn’t Muscle, It’s a Ratchet
Most animals hold a strong grip by keeping their muscles under constant tension, which burns energy fast. Eagles cheat the system. The tendons running down their legs, and the sheaths those tendons pass through, are lined with tiny ridges. When the foot closes, those ridges interlock like the teeth of a ratchet. The result is a locked grip that costs almost no ongoing muscular effort to maintain.

Once that ratchet engages, the numbers get serious. Researchers who measured bald eagle foot pressure recorded readings in the range of 300 to 400 pounds per square inch — about ten times what an average human hand can produce. That is enough force concentrated through four sharp talons to puncture skin and crush small bones instantly.
The Myth: A Grip That Can’t Be Opened
Because the ratchet holds so effortlessly, a popular belief spread that an eagle’s talons lock shut involuntarily and the bird physically cannot release its grip once it closes. It is a dramatic idea, but it isn’t how the anatomy works.
The Truth Is Almost Scarier
An eagle can release its grip whenever it chooses — the ratchet just means it doesn’t have to spend energy holding on. The catch is that the bird sometimes chooses not to let go, even when it probably should. Eagles occasionally seize fish too heavy to lift, and rather than release the catch, they will row themselves toward shore with their wings, half-swimming through open water. Most make it. Some don’t, and the same grip that makes the eagle such an efficient hunter becomes the reason it can’t save itself.
