The great white shark is the most famous predator in the ocean. But it has a predator of its own, and the encounter is remarkably one-sided: an orca can kill a great white and take what it wants from the carcass in the time it takes to boil a kettle.
Two Minutes, Working Alone
Off the coast of South Africa in 2023, researchers documented something they had never seen before: a single orca, working with no help from its pod, killed a juvenile great white shark. The whole attack took less than two minutes. Earlier records of orcas hunting great whites always involved a group. This was one animal, one shark, and a very short fight.
Why the Liver
The orca did not eat the shark. It ate one part of it. A great white’s liver is enormous, roughly a third of the animal’s body, and it is packed with oil that the shark uses for buoyancy and energy storage. That makes it the richest meal on the shark’s body. Orcas have learned to go straight for it: they open the shark, extract the liver, and leave the rest to sink. Carcasses washed up in South Africa have been found with surgical-looking wounds and the liver missing.
The Coast Empties
The most striking effect is not the kill itself but what happens afterwards. When orcas known to hunt sharks move into an area, great whites leave. Tagging studies around False Bay and Gansbaai showed sharks fleeing the moment orcas appeared, and in some cases the sharks did not return for months. A stretch of coast that had been famous for great white sightings simply went quiet.
A New King
The great white has a bite built to crush sea turtles and a reputation that has carried a whole film genre. Against an orca it does not fight. It runs. One orca, two minutes, one liver, and the animal that everyone thought sat at the top of the ocean food chain turns out to have someone above it.
