The Sting Rated Worst On Earth, By Its Own Discoverer

The bullet ant's sting tops the Schmidt Sting Pain Index at a perfect 4.0 — described by the scientist who created the scale as feeling like fire-walking on hot coals with a nail in your heel.

The Worst Sting on the Entire Pain Scale

Of every insect sting or bite that entomologists have ever measured for pain, one ant sits alone at the very top: the bullet ant, native to the rainforests of Central and South America, rated a full 4.0 on the Schmidt Sting Pain Index — the highest score the scale allows.

The Scientist Who Ranked It Lived Through It Himself

The index isn’t based on secondhand reports. Entomologist Justin O. Schmidt built the scale by deliberately allowing dozens of species of ants, bees, and wasps to sting him, then rating and describing each sensation from memory. His description of the bullet ant’s sting has become famous in its own right: “pure, intense, brilliant pain… like fire-walking over flaming charcoal with a three-inch rusty nail in your heel.”

Twenty-Four Hours, Not Twenty-Four Minutes

Most insect stings peak in intensity and fade within an hour. A bullet ant sting is different — the pain can stay at a debilitating level for up to 24 hours straight, which is part of why it earned the top score rather than sharing the ranking with other severe stings that hurt just as much but don’t last nearly as long.

A Sting Turned Into a Rite of Passage

Rather than avoiding bullet ants, some Indigenous communities in the Brazilian Amazon, including the Sateré-Mawé people, have built a coming-of-age ritual directly around them. Young men weave gloves lined with dozens of sedated bullet ants, then wear them for around ten minutes at a time — repeating the ritual multiple times over months or years as a test of endurance.

It’s rare for a single sting to define both a pain scale and a rite of passage, but the bullet ant’s sting is intense enough, and lasts long enough, that people have built an entire cultural tradition around choosing to feel it.
