The numbers are brutal. Within about a minute of constriction, heart rate dropped to nearly half of baseline, and the heart’s electrical rhythm began to break down. The heart simply does not have the strength to pump against that external pressure. Part of what makes constriction so efficient is that the snake never has to squeeze harder. Each time the prey breathes out, the coils take up the slack, tightening a little more and never letting go of the ground they gain. The victim’s own breathing works against them, ratcheting the pressure upward until circulation fails.

Among constrictors, the reticulated python stands apart as the longest snake alive, capable of subduing large mammals with these same coils.
