A Four-Inch Dagger on Each Foot
The ostrich’s real weapon is its foot. Each leg ends in just two toes, and the larger inner toe carries a thick, dagger-like claw roughly four inches long. Because the force of the whole leg is funneled into that single sharp point, a kick does not just bruise — it punctures and tears.
The Only Bird That Can Kill a Human

Standing up to nine feet tall and weighing around three hundred pounds, it drives that mass down the leg and into the claw. The two-toed foot concentrates the entire force into a tiny surface area, maximizing the damage.
Fast Enough to Close the Distance
Escape is not easy either. The ostrich is the fastest bird on land, sprinting at speeds around forty miles an hour. It can outrun most threats — or run one down. When fleeing is not an option, it turns and kicks, and few predators want to test what happens next.
